Hm. Everything works for me:

% uname -a
FreeBSD nas.dgap.mipt.ru 4.5-STABLE FreeBSD 4.5-STABLE #2: Fri Mar 15 
01:53:25 MSK 2002
root@nas.dgap.mipt.ru:/usr/obj/data/FreeBSD/stable/src/sys/NAS  i386

% sysctl hw.atamodes
hw.atamodes: dma,---,---,---,

Maybe this is related with recent ATA MFC?
