If you are used to Windows, it's more like DOS, than anything else. You tell the computer what to do with your keyboard, instead of that lovely mouse on your desk. Although, you can get X-Windows, which is sort of like MS Windows. Telnet is the program/interface that you use to manipulate/control your FreeBSD machine remotely, as if you were right on the console (sitting front of the computer). At the same time, when you are actually in front of the machine, the interface is pretty much the same as what you would see in telnet, just without the actual telnet "window". Yes, you can practice programming code and same them to files too! The standard FreeBSD interface is basically all text based, with a command line, which you use to tell the computer what to do! ;) Still interested in FreeBSD?
