Thank you all, Ken, Justin and Wilko for your feedback.
A more precise description of H/W configuration: it is an AHA1742*A*,
did burn latest F/W v1.42 into it. As 174x has only passive terminators,
passive ones are removed, but an active 50pin HD SCSI terminator is
plugged into the external connector, there are *no* external devices. The
internal bus is also actively terminated by the NEC 502 CD Rom drive, in
addition, there are two Quantum Pro1800 HDs and a TDC4100 on the bus
(total of four devices plus HA).
Yes, a CD Rom had been inserted during bootup (when CAM errors occured).
I have also tried 'immedeate return on seeks' (in EISA CFG, default enabled)
set to disabled - didn't help, neither as did various kernel cfg file changes.
Yes, I *did* compile 7-8 different kernels up to now, mainly trying to
resolve the CD drive problem (enabling SMP is straightforward). Justin, I
do not feel capable, however, of patching in the Linux driver. Moreover, as
pointed out in my last mail, the Linux driver has a much more serious bug
when running in SMP mode (did *scramble* whole Ext2 partition about 15
times, had to re-install entire system that often).
So, I'd prefer a fixed version of FreeBSD's ahb driver. Have any changes
been made to the ahb driver since 3.2? Are kernel (better: mere driver)
patches available allowing to upgrade kerneldist from 3.2 to 3.4?
Finally, I *found* a way allowing the current driver to connect to the NEC
CD Rom drive: when setting the (undocumented) J6 Jumper, the drive steps
down from SCSI-II to -I mode .. and the CAM driver selects the drive. I'd
prefer, however, if the driver worked in SCSI-II mode as some features
became unavailable under other OS, otherwise. Should I try to downgrade
AHA1742A's F/W to v1.40? Alas, there is no new code for NEC 502 drive.
BTW: there's a 2740 in another box. It seems to be much more delicate
than the 1742A, as it did not even recognize an externally connected
Fujitsu M2512A MO drive (2740 also with latest v2.10 F/W).
As to the 'ECB 0xc2e83e80' error (mentioned in the end of my first Mail):
The time out error msgs read (probe0:ahb0:0:0:0) and (probe0:ahb0:0:6:0),
exactly and only those two. While there is a hard disk with ID0, there is
*no* device with ID6. Other existing devices (ID1 through 3) were not
covered by the error msg. Probably still a driver bug? Note that error
occurs with 2nd FreeBSD boot, booting DOS (with Aspiedos.sys loaded)
from ID0 in between does not affect/ fix behaviour.
