When FreeBSD is idle, it sends an HLT instruction to the processor (except if you are using a multi-proc computer) to HALT or temporarily power down portions of the CPU to keep it cool and keeps the power consumption down. That is why the machine can be stable for a long time if you don't do anything taxing on it.
