Just tried 8.0 of May 2008.  Same thing.

BTW, Gentoo 1.4 eventually boots, disabling the USB disks legacy
support in the BIOS.  (As far as I understand, it's an emulation that
lets primiteve OSs see the USB disks as IDE disks, or something like
that.)  This doesn't help FreeBSD, though.
