As I recall the high-end SGI servers have a CPU on the I/O board to
offload ethernet and SCSI chores. The IO3 board in my old 4D3x0's had a
68030. Was told at boot time this CPU initializes the whole system, does
the initial hardware inventory, then finally boots a MIPS CPU to finish
the process.
