advice: in the future (and for those who have a working system and haven't done it yet) either run the script in /etc/periodic/daily/xxx.backup (just check the exact name; escapes my mind at the moment) so you can have backup of system files in /var/backup OR copy those system files (like master.passwd, /etc/passwd, and so on) to floppies (seems that floppies are the most reliable backup - fd not working just replace it, no need to fiddle with SCSI IDs or SCSI cards and so on) so that next time you won't have to worry about your user's usernames/password or even root's. just my 2cents.
