Actually, it does work.  What are you using to resolve names?  Note that
nslookup will always go for a nameserver.

Check also that the host you're after is properly defined in /etc/hosts.

Your configuration.  I've run against slow nameservers with a hosts-first
strategy for a long time with no problems.

Yes.  Check the sample configs that come with named, the manpage and if its
still not clear, get the O'Reilly DNS and Bind book.
