this is the answer to my own dumb prob.

i happen to have to deal with a bunch of Motorola UDS v.3225
modems that came through some gov contract.  these modems have
their non-default CTS/RTS option listed as \Q3.

however "\q" is a CHAT escape sequence.

HOW CAN I GET BY THIS! is it even possible?

(HINT: STAY AWAY FROM THESE MODEMS!)
