Dear Mr. FreeBSD-questions! I'm having trouble with my SCSI subsystem (consisting of an AHA2940U Ultra SCSI adapter, a Quantum Fireball 3200S hard drive, a Toshiba 5701 12x CDROM and a SyQuest EZflyer 230MB removable drive). (1) When copying larger amounts of data off the CDROM (such as packages, sources etc...), the kernel sometimes says "Unexpected busfree" or "Target did not send an identify message", the latter much more often. This is quite annoying since the kernel doesn't usually manage to regain control of the SCSI system, thus forcing me to reboot without dismounting. It happens much more often with Ultra SCSI speed set to "ON" in the AHA2940U BIOS. (2) When I include the EZflyer in my SCSI chain (terminating everything properly etc.), I usually run into trouble when the EZflyer spins down (i.e. after 30 minutes of no access). SyQuest did not provide me with a facility to turn spindown off (i'm not too interested in powersaving; crash-free unix systems are much more to my liking). When the drive spins down (which ist does only with a media inserted) the kernel says "Unexpected busfree" and is down in the dumps - no syncing, no recovery, no nothing. and some non-SCSI problems as well: (3) How do I set up FreeBSD filesystems on removable media? (Unable to do this, I usually use them as tar media and it can be quite annoying) This includes the unmounting of filesystems which I somehow cant get working. (4) How do I set the timeout value for Mitsumi drives in the kernel? I've got an ancient FX001D in my machine (to install sources etc. because of the broken Toshiba SCSI drive), and it quite often complains of timeouts when running in multitasking. Installing from /stand/sysinstall is quite impossible this way because it usually locks up the machine, and anywhere else it's quite tedious. I think that's it ;) Philipp Reichmuth
