for me at least /etc/namedb is a symlink
(10:14:00 </etc>) 0 $ ls -la /etc/namedb
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  21 Dec  3 21:00 /etc/namedb@ ->
/var/named/etc/namedb

I tend to access it via /etc though habit. (been using pretty much the
same config since 5.x with some minor changes that i cant remember off
hand.)
