Did you test if ZFS on FreeBSD can handle hot spares? The list time i 
tried this, ZFS cann't use spares, because in the [Open]Solaris world, 
there is some background daemon controling the spares, but there is none 
in the FreeBSD. So ZFS on FreeBSD was not using spares even if it is 
local drive.
