I=E2=80=99m using apcupsd (installed via pkg) and have it set to =
gracefully shutdown my machines when the battery is nearly drained. A =
couple of weekends ago, we had the power go out at night and my machines =
shut themselves off gracefully as expected. Of course, I had to bring =
them back up manually when I got up, but I would prefer this than having =
them go down hard on a power outage.

Your situation may vary as to what you consider the appropriate response =
and recovery process for your machines, but I=E2=80=99ve had apcupsd do =
what I told it and automate the low battery shutdown.
