FreeBSD is as good a unix as any other. With respect to hardware,
do not heed me much because I don't have much expertise on the subject,
but what you have seems *way* more than enough. I'd suggest having a look
at http://www.freebsd.org or the HTML manual in one of the CDs of the
distribution and look there for compatibility issues regarding hardware.

As far as I can recall, at least 2.2.7 comes with KDE ready to
install. I think this desktop didn't work very well for me, or maybe I
just didn't bother to take the time to fine tune it. Maybe other people
have different experiences.

Actually there are several available for FreeBSD. It's a matter
