Which 3C556? There are two 3C*556 cards that 3com produced. One is a modem (and I think ethernet) card in the mini-pci form factor. This works in -current and I think also -stable (you'd have to check the xl driver there). The other card is an old 56k modem + 3c589E ethernet part. This doesn't work.
