It's a bit late for 20-20 hindsight of course, but the first thing I usually
do in that case is a recursive chmod/chown of everything in the compromised
user's home directory.  (usually to 'nobody'/666)

My SO just suggested one of those rotating gadgets that plumbers use for
cleaning drains with.  My, but she has a nasty mind.
