I'd recommend upgrading to FreeBSD-2.1.5

You can do this via sup for example ... I was running FreeBSD 2.0, 2.1,
2.1-stable and now I'm running FreeBSD-current, but I never had trouble
with MFS ...

Perhaps swap space is too small ?! Any pointer in /var/log/messages 
that might tell you the real problem ?!

I only had a problem, using the mfs for more then 1 directory ...
