A rebuild of ssh did help this.

sig 12 is SIGSYS which means that a non-existent system call invoked.
A new kernel fixed this.

Now I'm happy again.  ps works again too (which was why I rebooted the
new kernel, when I noticed the other problem was fixed thereby.
