Ah, but you didn't state it that way.  I interpreted your post to 
mean that "f2c+gcc is good enough; why upgrade it to g77?"

I actually agree that Fortran could be completely removed from the
base system (provide a port in available).  

I'm arguing that if FreeBSD continues to ship a Fortran compiler in 
the base distribution, then we should consider upgrading to g77.
