Whether or not this is true in all cases, was definitely true in mine. I've had several problems in the past with various (Asus, Tyan, Abit) Athlon based motherboards and generic RAM. If I only use name-brand parts, every system has worked flawlessly. The *only* problems I have ever had with K7 systems were fixed with new memory. With that one qualification, I'd heartily recommend AMD over Intel. For Crucial memory: http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?model=S2462+Thunder+K7&x=7&y=23 that's $50 US / 256 MB.
