My wife (non-techie) and I use Thunar in XFCE4.4. Thunar comes
installed by default with XFCE4.4, I believe. It is plenty fast and
doesn't require all the Gnome and KDE bloat. XFCE4 is also newbie
friendly and fast enough for my purposes.
