My roommate had the same problem with his sony VAIO laptop. I pruned the kernel
config file and replaced all isa ata entries with 'device ata'. I also removed
the ATAPI_STATIC_ID. I can't remember completely what else I may have done, but
that was about it, I think.

Pat Wendorf had the audacity to say:
