ISTR it is a 3c589 you are talking about?  Those I had (3c589D)
always failed to recognize the twisted pair connection, falling
back to BNC.  Take a look at the ifconfig(8) and the rc.conf(5)
manpages and read how to add "media 10baseT/UTP" to your NIC
setup.
