Oops, never mind: I figured it out[1].  `genericups' turned out to
create the genericups-cuaa1 file in /var/db instead.

[1] Why does it so often happen within five minutes from sending a SOS
message to a mailing list, even though I've spent over two hours
trying to solve the problem before resorting to asking for help?! :)
