I know of at least two other people that have similar problems with
the ATI 128 cards. I installed new versions of the fonts and tried
various window managers and the display problem was still present.

I do not believe that you did anything wrong.

The XFree86 3.3.6 works fine with my old Diamond Stealth 64 VRAM (S3).

I would love to get my ATI 128 card to work, but it will stay on
the shelf until someone has time to finish fixing whatever is wrong
with XFree86 3.3.6. The Xfree86 3.3.4 and this card would not even
allow X to start. So there has been improvement.

I sent a report to xfree86@x.physics.usyd.edu.au and got an automated
response assuring me that the message has been forwarded to
the development team.
