The route command is definitely bogus, and isn't in any of the documentation I know of any more. Go to http://www.awfulhak.org/ppp.html. There's a pointer to the -current ppp.conf and ppp.linkup from there. Try the "pmdemand" example, it should work fine. If you're still experiencing problems, Take a look at http://www.freebsd.org/~brian/ppp-2.2-970629.tar.gz and post/mail me the log file after a "set log +lcp".
