Hi Mark,
   How are you doing the d'loads to / from each machine?

What's between the two boxes involved in the tests?

Have you got a trace (tcpdump / ethereal) on each d'load attempt? 

What's the card configs on the WinXP box

You knew it was coming.., what's the interface config on the network
device on the lan?
