   Could it be a printer-specific (or printer-compatibility)
problem?  My HP DeskJet 880C does not have that problem at all:

ppc0 at port 0x378-0x37f irq 7 flags 0x40 on isa0
ppc0: Generic chipset (EPP/NIBBLE) in COMPATIBLE mode
ppb0: IEEE1284 device found /NIBBLE/ECP
Probing for PnP devices on ppbus0:
