To rudely follow up my own message, I got it to work by doing a rm -rf
on my compile directory and then going back to conf and starting over
at 'config' and then rebuilding everything. I found the hints in
questions, not stable. (Why did I wait until after I sent the message
to search questions?)

I don't know what cruft was in there, but it's better now. I think
I'll drop Warner a note to put into UPDATING.
