The normal advice I had seen regarding upgrading X is to just
install over the old version. However, I didn't have a lot of luck
doing that when I upgraded from 3.3 to 4. Among other things, I
think the install had difficulties with the symbolic links that
XFree-3.3 created.

I prepared for my upgrade by copying the X11R6 directory to X11R6.old;
then uninstalling everything that lives in /usr/X11R6/bin, and
reinstalling it all again.

Hopefully there is a better procedure, but this seemed to be the
cleanest, if not the quickest, way to upgrade.
