I have had some success with: `xset dpms force off` But for whatever reason, my dell D800 won't turn the backlight off in X, only when running text-only. You could work around this by switching to a different console right before sleep, but again my dell has another problem where it won't go *back* to video mode once it's been there; i.e. the screen whites out and the box crashes. Maybe these are all nvidia driver issues, which I have to use to address the fact that an external monitor won't work with the nv driver....:| Mike
