Okay, another piece to the puzzle: I wondered why I'm the only one complaining and digged somewhat further into it. The "problem" on my machine is 'keybell="visual"' in /etc/rc.conf. With it the probability for shutdown(8) and / or init(8) deadlocking is nearly 100%. Without it I wasn't able to reproduce it once in 20 reboots. This gives a way to more or less reliable reproduce the problem. 1. Set 'keybell="visual"' 2. service syscons onestart 3. shutdown -r now So far I haven't tested vt(4), nor if the VESA mode of syscons has any effect on the probability.
