NOTES was split into a machine dependent part and a machine
independent part.

The one you need is in /usr/src/sys/conf/, not /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/.

Think of them as logically concatenated together... or illogically
separated into two files, whichever makes you feel better.  8-).
