If you have a problem with the boot loader crashing after it loads /boot/loader.conf from the install CD, just power off and on the system, then when you see the boot loader, repeatedly hit the space bar, until you see that it is loading /boot/kernel/kernel. After this, it will then be able to load the system installer, and allow you to install the system. When the system is installed you'll have no problem booting the system from the harddrive.
