I should have pointed out the first time that you must have x11 running.

navigating the make config menu is fairly straight forward.  If that is what
your problem is, I suggest learning to use it.  Maybe your keyboard isn't
working correctly there either or maybe it's sudo thing.

you can blow out the config and start over.

make deinstall
make rmconfig
make install clean

You will get an options screen at this point again, do not change any
settings unless you know exactly what you are doing.
