clues start to surface

% sawfish-ui --group=bindings
error: can't connect to socket /tmp/.sawfish-randy/foo.bar:0.0
*** Error: can't connect to sawfish on display, :0.0
% ls -a /tmp
./ .X0-lock orbit-randy/ ssh-LPN34559/
../ .X11-unix/ orbit-root/ ssh-t4SlAh9I/
.ICE-unix/ .esd/ ssh-6ZDRRt39/

i.e. the /tmp/.sawfish-... directory was not created on startup.
how do i figure out why?

randy
