I just upgraded to 4.51.  My dependencies were all messed up, so I
pkg_deleted cclient and the old pine, used pkgdb -F to fix, and then
installed the new Pine from ports.  No problems with old mail or
settings, at least that I've noticed.

(Why don't you want to use portupgrade?)
