I wasn't able to upgrade from FreeBSD 4.3 (bought, on 4 CDs) to 4.5 until I kicked the right door in in using /stand/sysinstall to accomplish this. :) I can't remember, but I may have booted up to floppies (I take it you know how to create these?) and upgraded via FTP. Hope this helps. If you upgrade just the kernel funny things might happen.
