Ok,

do a <control-alt-del> wait for the machine to reboot.

on reboot, wait for boot:
type -s <enter>

the machine will stop prompting for shell
type <enter>

mount /
mount /usr
export TERM=cons25
vipw

----------------
remove password for root (first line> exit vipw
and type exit <enter>

the machine should reboot with no root password.
