Running a 51gig raid 5 arraid here on a compaq proliant 3000 with the smart array controller with no problems.. ( they make really good dev servers) i think you are missing one step after you install, see, the kernel in the boot floppy contains supports for the ida device, but the kernel that's installed during the sys install, doesnot.
