Times change.  dbus and hald use with X are covered in the latest version=
 of
the handbook -- see Section 5.4.2 here:

This is apparently a transitory state of affairs as the xorg people are
somewhat disenchanted with the dbus/hald solution (not to mention any
number of users who have been bitten by it) and by all accounts the next
release will do things differently again.
