I don't know about OpenLDAP but Netscape directory server can handle around 20 connections/second. (afaik both OpenLDAP and Netscape dir. server started life as UMich slapd). Sendmail will talk to it directly for any map lookups (virtusertable and the like) which might be helpful. Certainly Radiator and probably other radius servers can use ldap, and from a quick look it should be fairly trivial to port to PAM (if it hasn't already been done).
