Be more patient. The ``group of people'' you are talking about is
currently waiting for some infrastructure necessary to perform its
duties. Hopefully the issue will be resolved soon (the work is
underway), so what we really need is a little more patience.

Personally I do have a number of outstanding patches for that file
accumulated over the past 6 months, therefore I can understand your
desire to fix/improve things ASAP, but also I understand the need to
keep bsd.port.mk sane and the latter should have a priority, IMO.
