sparc?  Where'd you get that ssh?  Does a local (on the Solaris box) ssh
session work?  How about local on the FreeBSD box?

Sorry, I've lost the context, did you build the FreeBSD ssh from the ports
collection?  Why not ssh2?

I've got ssh2 running between a Solaris box and FreeBSD with no problems.
There are options to compile and execute without X support.
