Really simple, actually:

1) connect modem to wall and computer like directions say
2) edit your rc.conf file so that it says: 

ifconfig_<insert interface here>="DHCP"

3) Make sure there isn't any other references to that same interface in the
rc.conf file.

4) do a (as root) /etc/netstart

5) you should be good to go.
