    kernel slice: 5.0-CURRENT 2002.10.03.12.00

    hints for cd0/1 force them to cd2/3
    [from dmesg --full list at end]

      Mounting root from ufs:/dev/da0a
      cd3 at trm0 bus 0 target 6 lun 0
      cd3: <CREATIVE DVD-RAM RAM1216S 1311> Removable CD-ROM SCSI-2 device
      cd3: 10.000MB/s transfers (10.000MHz, offset 15)
      cd3: cd present [1218960 x 2048 byte records]
      cd2 at trm0 bus 0 target 4 lun 0
      cd2: <TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-3401TA 0283> Removable CD-ROM SCSI-2 device
      cd2: 4.032MB/s transfers (4.032MHz, offset 15)
      cd2: Attempt to query device size failed: NOT READY, Medium not present

    ALRIGHT! I do notice that the aic7899 is now declaring
    as ahc0 and ahc1 for the first time this year which
    probably means I can move the 160s to the B channel and
    the legacy CDROM, ZIP and DVDRAM to the A channel and it
    will boot with everything up --hopefully without hints.

    Checking backward, it looks like it was installed prior
    to my 29 Sep 1200 GMT slice; I think the cam and and aic
    revisions went in on 27 Sep, but I don't have the cvsup
    logs. I'll recable accordingly and test before trying
    GEOM again after the last two lockups on successive
    day's builds.

      ahc0: <Adaptec aic7899 Ultra160 SCSI adapter> port 0x1400-0x14ff mem 0xf4002000$
      aic7899: Ultra160 Wide Channel A, SCSI Id=7, 32/253 SCBs
      ahc1: <Adaptec aic7899 Ultra160 SCSI adapter> port 0x1800-0x18ff mem 0xf4003000$
      ahc1: bus_alloc_resource() failed to allocate IRQ
      device_probe_and_attach: ahc1 attach returned 12

    likewise, hints for sio2 forces the pci card modem
    to move to sio4

      hint.sio.0.at="isa"
      hint.sio.0.port="0x3F8"
      hint.sio.0.flags="0x10"
      hint.sio.0.irq="4"
      hint.sio.1.at="isa"
      hint.sio.1.port="0x2F8"
      hint.sio.1.irq="3"
      hint.sio.2.at="isa"
      hint.sio.2.disabled="0"
      hint.sio.2.port="0x3E8"
      hint.sio.2.irq="5"
      hint.sio.3.at="isa"
      hint.sio.3.disabled="1"
      hint.sio.3.port="0x2E8"
      hint.sio.3.irq="9"

     from dmesg:

      sio0: <3COM PCI FaxModem> port 0x2018-0x201f irq 11 at device 9.0 on pci0
      sio0: moving to sio4
      sio4: type 16550A

    The bottom line is that neither the sio/isa hints nor
    the SCSI hints work as advertised.
