Do you run a firewall (ipfw) on that machine?  Perhaps you are hitting
stateful connection limits?

I used to set this in /etc/sysctl.conf to avoid the issue for me:

# increase the number of dynamic firewall rules allowed
net.inet.ip.fw.dyn_max=3000
