Hit ALT-F2 while it's "initing" (newfs?) the partition, and see if you can 
catch the actual error message.

You won't get around too quickly, but it will work.

It's pushing it.  You won't have much space to do anything.

Depends on how much junk you're going to accumilate :-)  I have a 540mb disk 
dedicated that I've filled, but I have way to many packages installed.
