I was given this patch (http://www.bsdchicks.com/xe.patch) to try by 
Rogier R. Mulhuijzen <drwilco@drwilco.net> 

 but I haven't time yet.... and I  have a working 3com card.....so motivation 
to find time is a little lacking

as a temporay work around,  creating a pccard.conf file with the exact 
entries for the card  (network section) only worked for me.
