Hello Nathan. As an example, ftp.ca.freebsd.org right now averages about
5 to 7 Mbit/sec over a 24 hour period. Peaks during prime hours are
generally between 18 and 20 Mbit/sec. The week following the 4.3
release, the server was averaging about 30 to 35 Mbit/sec.

I belive to carry a full archive, roughly 50GB are needed today.

The idea is that a set of "tier 1" mirrors will carry the complete
archive, and a (most likely larger) set of "tier 2" mirrors will carry
subsets of the main mirror (likely the latest release bits).

The idea of archive.freebsd.org has been thrown around to carry all of
the older release data, as you suggest. I'm not sure if any consensus
was reached on the archive idea. I would suspect bandwidth needed by the
archive site(s) would be fairly low.
